Packaging costs more than milk? my country produces 6-micron aluminum foil, breaking Europe's decades-long monopoly!
Apr 14,2025
After more than ten rolling processes, aluminum foil with a thickness of only 0.006 mm was successfully born. This food-grade packaging material, which is equivalent to one-tenth of a hair, successfully broke the price monopoly of Europe for decades. The dilemma that the cost of milk packaging boxes is higher than that of milk will become history. Why can the cost of packaging be higher than that of milk? How did my country develop ultra-thin aluminum foil to break the monopoly?
Tetra Pak's monopoly on milk packaging: One bottle of milk a day, strong Chinese people, this slogan from the 1980s, I don't know if you have heard of it. In the absence of fresh-keeping technology at that time, milk was delivered to the doorstep by a special person every day. The regional restrictions also affected the sales of many dairy companies.
So as early as the last century, Sweden's Tetra Pak aseptic packaging began to enter the Chinese market, and even almost monopolized the milk packaging in China. While it pushed Mengniu and Yili to become Chinese dairy giants, the disadvantages of monopoly began to gradually emerge. For every box of milk sold by the dairy group, Tetra Pak would take 75% of the profit, which also led to the packaging cost being even higher than milk.
It is understood that as early as 2012, Tetra Pak had earned 12 billion yuan in the Chinese market and monopolized 95% of China's aseptic flexible packaging market. Even though Tetra Pak was fined 668 million yuan for monopolistic behavior in 2016, this was a drop in the bucket compared to the huge profits, so it did not affect Tetra Pak's development. How difficult is it to develop this milk packaging? How did my country break the monopoly?
How did my country break the monopoly? Unlike ordinary cartons, milk packaging is more complicated. It has a total of 6 layers of structure including PE plastic film, aluminum foil, and cardboard. Among them, 75% of the packaging weight is paper, 20% is plastic film, and 5% is aluminum foil. The aluminum foil also needs to have the characteristics of sterility, moisture resistance, and freshness preservation. Tetra Pak successfully achieved a monopoly by bundling filling equipment and aseptic cartons, and controlling raw materials.
Although Funmei Packaging was established in my country in 2003 and began to enter the domestic aseptic packaging market, with the development of technology, people have higher requirements for lightweight, which also puts forward more stringent requirements on the materials used to manufacture packaging. Therefore, Hunan Shengtong Technology Group in my country has pioneered the short-process manufacturing technology of "casting and rolling instead of hot rolling" and independently developed 18 aluminum template automatic production lines, becoming the world's largest double-zero aluminum foil production and sales base, with the thickness of the produced aluminum foil being only 0.0063mm.
As of the end of 2021, Shengtong Group has produced and sold a total of 850,000 tons of aluminum foil, about 52.5 billion square meters, which can cover the homes of 1.4 billion Chinese people. Although it is thin, its ability to preserve food and block bacteria is also very strong, with an antibacterial rate of 99.9%, and has been approved by the SGS Group, an international standard inspection and certification authority.
